E-glide Goes Fully Tethered and Features Custom Decks
We would like to take this moment to thank for contributing this article: E-glide Goes Fully Tethered and Features Custom Decks. Anyone that contributes is a welcome addition to AllOnSkateboarding.com!"We realized the Chinese plank boards everyone is using for these powerboards isn't what people want – they want custom decks," explained Dave Lohrli, CEO of Santa Monica, Calif.-based Crossbow USA, Inc., manufacturers of the E-glide and E-glide II electric skateboards. "We are going with American-made boards even though the cost is a little bit more. We will also continue to offer our standard E-glide II for the low price of $299."These and other electric skateboards are available right now at www.slide4less.com or by calling (510) 832-2824.E-glides feature a maximum speed of 20 miles per hour and a range of 12-15 miles on a 24-volt battery. They crank up plenty of power from a 400-watt motor and the braking is regenerative. The hand-held remote gives precise control over speed and braking, while a new, three-position speed selector provides slow, medium, and fast settings to allow beginners as well as experienced riders a choice.
The boards can also be turned in an eight-foot radius, making them highly maneuverable, even in crowds."The reason we're not really selling the wireless right now is because it's more expensive to manufacture and it's not reliable," Lohrli said. "When we were selling the wireless electronics (featured on the original E-glide model), we'd ship across the country and if there was a problem the consumer couldn't troubleshoot it themselves because it was way too complicated. Then they had to ship the entire board back to us. We were looking at $70 in roundtrip shipping costs plus any potential damage during shipping so we had a lot of problems and expense associated with it."What we've done by going to the cable board is reduce the electronics to about 10 percent of the wireless board, so now it only has one PC board," he added. "If there's a problem with the skateboard's electronics, we know it's limited to one PC board and the customer can replace that in 10 minutes.
The customer is happy and we're happy because it's both simple and reliable."The other upside is that tethered boards work better," Lohrli said. "They have much better control and feel and of course it's less expensive. They also have a longer range." After studying first-hand how the Chinese are manufacturing electric skateboards, Lohrli concludes "they don't really do it right" just yet, giving him some comfort in deciding to stick with the tethered model for the time being."The only way I believe you can get really high-American-quality electronics produced in China is if you control the factory with your own management in place, quality control and trained Americans who are supervising the process because all of this must be done in a clean room under perfectly sanitary conditions and that's not always the case," he explained. "When you combine that with trying to make a complicated wireless remote, they don't do it right. I've had so many sets sent out to me and the best-case scenario is they work for awhile and then quit."Here is a look at a few of the new E-glide IIs with custom decks.- The E-glide Classic, Retail Price $499"This board is made locally by a guy with a woodshop in Venice," Lohrli noted.
"They are all hardwood and the boards are absolutely gorgeous. The guy only makes five per week, the wood is pretty expensive and each one takes a long time to make."- The Dewey Weber, Retail Price $399Named for a surfing legend down in San Clemente with a popular line of surfing products, this 48-inch longboard is imprinted with the Dewey Weber name. "This deck works well as a platform for the electric skateboard and people love how it looks," he said.- The "Arbor Koa Wood" Concave, Retail Price $399"It's a very concaved board on the sides and ends," he said. "What makes it so unique is that up to now everybody has made flat deck electric skateboards except with maybe a kicktail. This really is the world's first concave electric skateboard and people are going nuts for it."- The Electric 48, Retail Price $399"This is basically a Vision board with a raised tail," he said.

"It's a 48-inch longboard with a laminated maple deck for the traditional ‘surfing' look that people really love."Lohrli hopes to test a prototype PC board manufactured in the United States within the next couple of weeks."We are constantly striving to improve these boards," he added. "I go over China and test stuff and look at what they're doing, but you're not going to change the Chinese systems. We're over there making these boards because we can buy for less and sell for less, but we really want to be able to put Made In America on them."Pick up an E-glide II custom model through Slide4less: www.slide4less.com or call (510) 832-2824.Slide4less has long supported technological innovations and market competition in motorized skateboard development.
